What the NFRC Is

The National Federation of Roofing Contractors was established in 1929 and is the UK's largest roofing trade association, with around 1,000 member companies. It represents residential and commercial roofing contractors across all trades and materials. Membership is voluntary — contractors aren't legally required to join — which means that holding NFRC membership is a genuine signal of a contractor who has chosen to meet an independent standard.

What the Vetting Process Covers

NFRC membership is not automatic on application. New members must demonstrate: current public liability insurance at a minimum of £2 million (most members carry £5 million or more); a minimum of two years trading history; satisfactory references from previous clients; and compliance with NFRC's Code of Conduct. Members are subject to periodic re-vetting and can be removed from the federation for sustained consumer complaints or conduct issues.

This is meaningfully different from unverified directory listings, review aggregators, or self-declared "approved" schemes where membership is simply a matter of paying a fee. The NFRC conducts its own assessment — you're not relying on the contractor's self-description.

How to Verify NFRC Membership

Search for the contractor by name or company number at nfrc.co.uk — we are registered members. This searches the live membership register and will confirm whether the company is a current member. If a contractor claims NFRC registration and doesn't appear in the register, either the claim is inaccurate or they've lapsed — both are worth querying directly.

NFRC members are entitled to use the federation's logo on their vehicles, documentation, and marketing. The logo itself can be checked via the NFRC website to confirm it's the current version and not an expired member's materials.

What NFRC Membership Doesn't Guarantee

Registration means the contractor has met the membership criteria at the point of joining and periodic review — it doesn't guarantee perfect workmanship on every job. It does, however, give you a route for complaint escalation. NFRC has a dispute resolution process that members are required to participate in, which gives you more recourse than you would have with a non-member contractor. It's one layer of protection, not the whole picture. Still get references from local customers, check the written quote carefully, and don't pay in full before work is complete.
